This past weekend was the culmination of many months of planning and stress. Finally, North Yarmouth Fun Day has come and gone! This was my first year on the North Yarmouth Events Committee, and up until Saturday I had convinced myself that it would also be my last. Once the day was over, though, I felt like I had learned a lot and would be able to help make things go much smoother the following year. I've already lined up some new activities!
It was a physically grueling long weekend. I took a vacation day on Friday and worked on setting things up from from basically 10:30am til 9pm, taking just a couple of breaks for meals and to go into work to fix a problem. Saturday, I was on my feet and running around like a lunatic from 7am til 5pm. Sunday, I put in another 4 hours cleaning up.
First thing on Saturday when I should have been checking in the volunteers, I got stuck running a half-mile race TWICE with my kids. For some reason that I'll complain about in a meeting soon, the race registration table was at the finish line, so we got their numbers and had to hurry our way to the starting line. I had doubts about the little one being able to make it half-a-mile, so I carried her the whole way to the starting line. Big sister was pretty tired by the time we got there, too.
After a half-dozen false starts because cars kept coming despite the sherrifs having closed the roads, the race began. The three year-old and I quickly lost sight of the almost six year-old as she and most of the rest of the pack disappeared. She did great - those long legs must have really helped!
Much to my surprise, little sister made it the whole way! Around 3/4 of the way through she started walking and getting mad saying "they already won!", but I said "No! You're winning the three year old race!" and then her face lit up and she started sprinting like crazy and ran all the way to the end.
It was a long day (they got there at 7am for the pancake breakfast), but they had a blast playing games, winning prizes, listening to music, and building fairy houses. I didn't really get to see much of what was going on or relax until it was over, but the Bean Supper that the Fire Department put on was just what I needed at the end of the day. I could appreciate, but not totally agree, with the sentiment that my littlest one said as I was putting them to bed, "I want to 'tay at Fun Day forever and ever!"
