Farm Share 2008 Week 6

Friday night, I was waffling back-and-forth over whether or not we should take the kids to the Clam Festival parade, but in the end I decided against it. We had a busy Saturday planned and I hate breaking their sleep schedule. As it turned out, there were huge thunderstorms in the area that night so it was just as well that we skipped it.

Saturday we went to my aunt's house to celebrate my grandfather's 87th birthday. It was VERY well attended, with 5 of his 6 children making it, all 7 grandchildren, and all 7 great-grandchildren. His brother Merle even made a rare appearance! Jim and his wife Nora were greatly missed, but they get a pass for living in Hawaii! The weather was beautiful and the kids spent lots of time in the pool.

On Sunday, I spent a couple of hours out in the incredibly buggy woods cutting and hauling firewood with my father. The deer flies were thicker than I've ever seen them before and I must have smacked at least two dozen of them off of my shiny head. The air was unbelievably thick and humid that morning, too. It was really pretty miserable, but at least I got to use the chainsaw for the first time. I am now all grown up.

After I got cleaned up, we did a little shopping and then went to Wally and SJ's for burgers and dogs. The kids played well and actually didn't make too much of a mess. Of course, I was able to get them home and to sleep on time, too!

Good thing you didn't attempt the Clam Fest parade. What a downpour!

How have you been eating your turnips?

Usually I slice them thin and sautee in olive oil with shallots and any greens that we have. I finish it all off with some salt, pepper and balsamic vinegar. The hakureis are pretty good raw, too.
