Farm Share 2008 Week 5
Before I get to this week's farm share, I'll recap the weekend.
Friday night, Karen, Ritchie and I went to the Mighty Mighty Bosstones and Drop Kick Murphys show. It was originally supposed to be at Hadlock Field, but was moved to the Cumberland County Civic Center at the last minute. I was never a big fan of the Bosstones, but I've got to say that they put on a really solid show. They had tons of energy and sounded great (I'm a sucker for horn sections). They played for 90 minutes, which at least twice as long as you usually get from an opening act. I guess they were really co-headlining. The older portion of the crowd was definitely there more for the Bosstones than the Murphys.
After a 30 minute break, the Murphys hit the stage and proceeded to blow the roof off the dump. They sounded great, but the crowd seemed really quiet to me. The Civic Center is really not a great venue for a show. I don't usually drink alcohol at shows, so the fact that the CCCC was not selling beer didn't affect me directly. However, I blame that for the crowd being lackluster energy-wise. Even after Kenny Casey announced that they were recording the show for a live album, the crowd still wasn't very boisterous. The band threw the vocals to the audience several times and the volume just wasn't there. I enjoyed the show, but it paled overall in comparison to the DKM show I had seen at the State Theater a couple years earlier.
Saturday night was... interesting. I try and schedule a Greely class of 91 outing once a quarter and this was our night. I try to mix it up and always ask for suggestions and this time I got an intriguing one: Harmony Hall. I have driven by HH hundreds of times and wondered what it was like, but have never been there in the 14 years I've been eligible to visit. First of all, the place is HUGE. I guess that at the peak there were 60 or 70 people, but it still felt really empty. Harmony Hall is a great place to drink (it's BYOB) and a great place to dance (I watched), but it's horrible for conversation. I don't think we'll be going back for one of our class get-togethers, but I'm going to keep my eye on the bands that are playing there from now on.
I spent the first half of Sunday recovering from the night before, but pulled it together in time to take the kids to Toots later in the afternoon. I tried out their new gelato and was VERY impressed with the Almond Joy. I even sent Angela out later to get me a pint, but they were sold out by then. She got me Tiramisu instead, but it wasn't quite as good.
